5/14/2023 0 Comments Einstein it's all relative![]() ![]() It is a melancholy truth that these particular memes will most likely be circulating on the internet until the last router rusts away to nothingness. This is my eclectic list of five things that Einstein did NOT say, and yet seem to be quoted and requoted again and again, especially in an educational context. To spare both our own blushes and those of our unsuspecting audience, it’s a good idea to check whether the Great Person actually said what they are reputed to have said.įor one reason and another, the life, career and reputation of Albert Einstein makes him an especially tempting target for spurious attributions. While it may be well-nigh irresistible to wrap ourselves in the borrowed robes of literary or scientific genius, the temptation is fraught with dangers. We have all done it, haven’t we? Each and every one of us has, at some point, appropriated (or misappropriated) a quotation from a great thinker or writer to lend a spurious profundity to our own footling little thoughts. ![]()

Tam uses they/them pronouns, has a bad family history, parents got divorced and an abusive step-father. Nova was raised by her queer Nanas, she has some Asian heritage and she’s deaf (she uses hearing aids). Importantly, the two main characters are diverse. There is a good balance of plot and romantic storyline, broken up well into 8 chapters and an epilogue. The villains introduced and resolved well, in a way that is to be expected for something that is pseudo-fairytale. ![]() She is a scientist who doesn’t know what to make of magic only believes because Nova showed her, but she willing to walk into a fight as a mere human to defend a friend (and deal with the shock of finding out there is much more than witches later). The two main characters are Nova Huang and Tam Lang, a witch and a werewolf. But it is effectively done with the art and story working well together. It is a fairly simple and well paced story, two reunited old friends working together to save one from an evil. Those sapphic tones are actually full themes. It has a super cute cover, clear supernatural themes and from the cover and blurb sapphic undertones. This is one of those books I picked up on an impulse. ![]() 5/14/2023 0 Comments Split Infinity by Piers Anthony![]() ![]() First volume of a trilogy that promises to be a sort of intellectual, semi-erotic Flash Gordon.Ī tightly wound caseworker is pushed out of his comfort zone when he’s sent to observe a remote orphanage for magical children. A weird blending of robot-serviced cities with charmed, Malory-touched pastoral sorcery: Stile, the best jockey on the planet Proton and a master gamesplayer at the Games, finds himself challenged to a set of mild gladiatorial encounters by glorious android Sheen (she nearly bests him). ![]() 5/14/2023 0 Comments Sheryl sandberg novel![]() ![]()

The introduction provides something that we modern readers sorely lack, context. It provides a breadth to the Austen experience unavailable from a single novel, and unlike some editions of her work, I actually found the critical opinions in this edition helpful. Reading four of Austen's works, two of which are unfinished drafts, all in one volume was very interesting. ![]() Though I considered Sense and Sensibility somewhat disappointing, Emma more than made up for it, and now Northanger Abbey has only confirmed this opinion. Since Middlemarch I've come a long way and read a lot more of Austen's works, and while Eliot's novel remains uneclipsed by Austen's novels, my awe and appreciation of Austen's abilities has only increased. Today I would like to apologize to Miss Austen. What can I say? I was young and stupid two years ago! ![]() I've talked smack about Jane Austen before, not so much to discount her ability as a writer-if you question that, then oh, we will throw down-but to compare her unfavourably to George Eliot. ![]() |
