Backed by two generations of experience in home education, veteran home educators Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child’s mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school “grammar stage,” when the building blocks of information are absorbed through memorization and rules the middle school “logic stage,” in which the student begins to think more analytically and the high-school “rhetoric stage,” where the student learns to write and speak with force and originality. ![]()

George Eliot is at her best and most entertaining in her psychological insights. But this more than a well-told coming of age story. Specific to The Mill on the Floss, this is a story of growing up and falling in love. ![]() Like George Eliot's other novels, the themes are pastoral life, struggle against circumstances, familial bonds, interplay of personalities. While this doesn't suit my preference, it demonstrates George Eliot's versatility in illuminating drama as well as character.I won't spoil the plot, but will share a flavour of what you will find. The finale felt extravagant, fabricated and Hardy-esque, set apart from the pastoral delicacy pervading the rest of the novel. Seemingly insignificant anecdotes shed light on siblings Maggie and Tom as they grow older, and it is their characterisation which I remember most. The most enthralling George Eliot I have read thus far, I enjoyed The Mill on the Floss, her second novel, more than her better known Middlemarch and Silas Marner. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Escaping destiny amelia hutchins![]() Whispers of Fate (Intro to Kahleena’s book) If you’d like to check out more of her work, or just hang out in an amazing tribe of people who enjoy rough men, and sharp women, join her at Author Amelia Hutchins Group on Facebook.īooks by Amelia Hutchins along with reading order for series Sometimes a story isn’t about the romance it’s about rising to a challenge, breaking through them like wrecking balls, and shaking up entire worlds to discover who they really are. This is an electronic book developed to teach young girls how to be “subversive.” It is an interactive storytelling instrument that personalizes everyone’s education by taking in information from its surroundings and presenting it to the child in a manner that is tailored to their life situation, personality, and learning style. ![]() The first is the central technology of the book, the illustrated primer. There are three technologies in The Diamond Age which I think merit mentioning here. In this future it is not only the political and cultural landscape which is interesting, but the technology as well, and perhaps most interesting of all is how humans interact with technology. The Diamond Age posits a future that isn’t quite dystopian or utopian, but similar to what we have now: a mix of good and bad. The ideas in it are representative of the creative and innovative writing of Neal Stephenson and the story’s flow and characters make it an absolute pleasure to read. Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age (1995) has had a significant impact on many people not only is it one of the precursors to the Center for Science and the Imagination, but it has also been used by the likes of Amazon for code words related to the development of the Kindle e-reader. ![]() ![]() But it seemed rather awkward to have Corwin walk through this room and note these paintings. Roger figured that Corwin could walk through an art gallery of sorts in the Westchester home of his sister Flora, looking at their portraits on the walls and describing them. When he was working on Nine Princes in Amber, he wanted to come up with some simple plot device to introduce all of Corwin's brothers and sisters in one place so the reader could refer back to it as each character shows up. I think a better question to ask is, "What ideas do you draw on to help you in deciding the direction your story will take?"
